I began fishing Southern California in the late 1940s in San Diego and Newport Beach. I worked on the sportboats out of H&M Landing in San Diego for several years, then fished commercially in summers, both on others and then my own jig boat. I fished for albacore, yellowtail, and barracuda. The 38’ Mary K, 28’ Monterey, 28’ Amigo, and 42’ Prowler II were used commercially and for 6 pac charters. I even had a plank built for a couple of years of swordfish chasing. I have fished the Revellagigados Islands of Mexico on long range boats many times. In recent years I have traveled to fish Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Hawaii, Florida Keys, Australia, Thailand, Burma, and Mexico. Tagging over 150 billfish (blue, stripes, sailfish) in recent years and receiving the AFTCO 1999 Pacific Ocean Angler of the Year for these efforts.
Memberships in past years include Balboa Angling Club, IGFA, NCMC, RFA, and Billfish Foundation. I currently have a 30’ Topaz Sportfisher, Osprey, in Newport Harbor on which I fish personally and do limited fishing charters and bay cruises. I possess a Coast Guard Captain’s License for 6 pack charters.
Fishing is my passion but my day job made much of this possible for many years. I also write fishing and conservation articles from experience and private studies. A few of these are available for club presentations as well |
